- I liked this touching webcomic that uses a quote from Roger Ebert.
- This makes no sense to me. Google explained its shutting down of Reader by saying that “users with smartphones and tablets are consuming news in bits and bites throughout the course of the day — replacing the old standard behaviors of news consumption over breakfast along with a leisurely read at the end of the day.” Is that some sort of common misconception that I'm not aware of? That people who use RSS only use it once or twice a day? Do people actually believe that? This article makes the future of news gathering/reading sound bad to me.

W 3-1
For how much I've ripped the Sox's relief pitching the last few days, I must applaud them after last night's performance. 3.2 innings of one-hit ball... not too shabby, although the 5 walks is still an issue. Still, they were able to hold a 2-run lead for 4 innings in Texas, which is not easy to do.
I don't like that the Sox would have been shut out if not for one Tyler Flowers home run, but baseball can be sensitive like that. One little thing can have a major impact, and it did last night.
I've got some potentially awful news regarding Gavin Floyd, which I also shared on Five Things. Looks like he could be out for a long time. If that's true, I think the Sox are going to need John Danks to come back rather soon. Santiago was pretty good last night, but I'm not sure if he's a long-term starter.
Stat of the Day: Addison Reed got his 10th save last night. That puts him one behind the leaders in that category. Also, he has saved 10 of the 12 White Sox wins.
Record: 12-15

W 5-2
I was able to watch a couple innings of tonight's Sox game. I watched intently as Jesse Crain tried to blow the 5-2 lead. Then I watched Addison Reed try to do the same thing. Luckily, both pitchers were able to hold onto the lead, which is a bit surprising, given how the bullpen has been performing lately.
Chris Sale had a strong outing, especially if you don't count the 2nd inning. Home runs from Conor Gillaspie and Alejandro De Aza gave the Sox the lead in the 7th, and they never looked back. The Sox were actually outhit 9-8 tonight, which makes me a feel a bit like they stole this one, but of course I'll take it.
Stat of the Day: The Sox only had one player in their lineup tonight who is hitting over .300. That player is.... Conor Gillaspie, at .323. The next best is Alexei Ramirez at .283, followed by Alex Rios at .276. Nobody else is above .240!!!

It's really tough for me to watch baseball right now. Pair the NHL playoffs with a terrible White Sox team and you've got a situation where I'm never going to pick baseball over hockey. I'll still try to churn out some sort of a write-up after all/most Sox games, but just know there's a very good chance I won't have watched any parts of the game, at least until later on in the NHL playoffs. Apologies for that, but if you're reading this, you're probably a Sox fan, too, and you probably don't want to watch them play either.
Anyway, the box score from this game tells a similar story to many games this year: the Sox got off to a strong start and then died in the later innings. Quintana, in typical Quintana fashion, failed to go deep in a game, and got rocked in the middle innings. And, once again, the bullpen was horrible, and the defense allowed 2 errors. Are there any positives to take from this game?
Yes! Dewayne Wise went 4-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Well done, Wise!
Stat of the Day: Dewayne Wise tied his career high in total bases in a game with 8.

RELATED: ESPN sure isn't focusing much on such a major announcement.
- Frequently I see articles that question whether something is "dead" when its numbers are down. A recent example is this article on whether the PC is dead. I've always hated that because it's a cliche, and because whatever's being referenced isn't dead, it's dying. Anyway, this leads me to ask, is Facebook dying? (Totally not a cliche because I said dying instead of dead.)
- In upsetting news, it's no longer Assembly Hall. Say hello to the State Farm Center. Are we going to nickname it The Farm? God.

For the first half of this game, I really thought the Sox were going to win easily. Then Matt Joyce hit a 2-run home run to tie the game in the 6th, and the Sox fell apart late. As usual. Not much else to say on this one - it was a game the Sox had until the pitching let them down. Maybe the off day will help before they head to Texas to face AJ Pierzynski.
Stat of the Day: In the 8th inning or later this year, the Sox have scored 12 runs while giving up 20.

Even though the Sox had the bases loaded with a chance to tie the game late, I never thought they had a chance to win this one. The Rays just kept piling together hits. I was mainly focusing on the Wild game last night, but I had the Sox on TV #2. Every time I looked up, the Rays were always threatening to score. So the winning streak is snapped, and the Sox will have to settle for a series win at best.
Gavin Floyd went out injured early in the game, which makes the loss even worse. Word on the street is he's headed to the DL, but I haven't heard how long he'll be out. He hasn't had the best stuff this year, but he's a quality starter who I think the Sox will miss. Meanwhile, John Danks is rehabbing in the minors, though I haven't heard when he'll be back.
Stat of the Day: The Rays scored in all but 2 innings yesterday. Complete domination.

Three in a row! The Sox were outhit 10-8 but managed to win, even after falling behind 3-0. I didn't have high hopes for a comeback, but Hector Gimenez, Tyler Greene, and Conor Gillaspie helped put the Sox ahead. Those are three players that are not typical starters (especially if Beckham's not injured) that were essential in last night's victory. I love seeing that.
My boy Addison Reed got the save again, but not before giving up two hits, a walk, and a run. I don't like that at all. He still doesn't have any blown saves on the year, but he's come awfully close a few times.
Stat of the Day: Tyler Greene hit his first White Sox home run last night.
Record: 10-12

It's a bad sign that 2 wins in a row feels like a lot more. But hey, I'll take it. I don't have a lot to say about this game, mostly because I watched almost none of it. It's worth pointing out, though, that 3 of the Sox's 5 RBIs came from Adam Dunn and Jeff Keppinger. Combined they went 3-8 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Not bad!
How about a weekend sweep? That'd be nice.
Stat of the Day: The Sox have scored 5 or more runs 5 times this season. Still haven't gotten to double digits yet, though.

Sox day games during the week are nice because they give me something to follow, but they're bad because I never follow as closely as I'd like to. It makes these write-ups difficult when I can't really picture anything that happened. Sure, an Alex Rios 2-run homer is self-explanatory enough. I guess my problem is that I don't know how the game really felt. Were the Sox in control the whole time? It doesn't really seem so. This is especially true because Quintana reached that dreaded 6th inning, and, just like every other Sox pitcher it seems, he started getting lit up.
I sometimes wonder if it's better to leave in a starter who had been having an otherwise good day, or to replace him with a hit-or-miss (is that a pun?) reliever. Obviously that answer changes with each case, but in general I just don't know. In this case, pulling Quintana worked, and the Sox held on for a 3-2 victory.
A final note: Addison Reed got the save, his first in what felt like a long time (really just since 4/16, but hey, that's quite a few games).
Stat of the Day: Jeff Keppinger's batting average is .188. Jeff Keppinger's on-base percentage is .183. That's impressive, but not the good kind of impressive.

- Manchester City are looking to buy an MLS franchise, so then there can be one MLS team that you can definitely root against.
- Dortmund's hero Robert Lewandowski may be joining Manchester United next year, because having RVP apparently isn't enough. F the world.
- Sometimes I have difficulty differentiating the concept of a fanbase from individual fans. Like, yeah, I guess you can say the Marlins fanbase sucks because nobody shows up to the games. But the Marlins fans that do exist... I don't know, I don't think they suck. Their team sure does, though! And another thought I have on this article, which I've wondered for many years... Does showing up to a game regardless of how your team performs make you a loyal fan or a sucker? Do you consider spending money on your team a sign of showing approval? Do lousy teams deserve to play in empty ballparks? Basically, I think you can coin positive and negative terms for these two situations. Fans always at games = loyal and suckers. Fans only at games when team is good: loyal fans with standards and bandwagon fans.
- One of the few good things about any NFL coverage is the Jamboroo.
- It's almost time for PLAYOFF HOCKEY!!! Best postseason in sports, I think.

- I'm surprised at the MLS being ranked the 7th best soccer league in the world. I don't really know how the points were awarded, but it just doesn't seem right.
- I know I've posted about the Premier League moving to NBC before, but here's a handy guide showing exactly what to expect. I would like to emphasize what I found in another article on this, which stated, "The network said games not aired on a designated NBC Universal channel would be made available to distributors via Premier League Extra Time, a package of overflow TV channels available at no extra cost for customers who receives NBC Sports Network." So viewers should be able to see any match they want, always.
- Funbag.
- The BCS commissioners thought long and hard about a new name for the 4-team playoff system. With a chance to coin an exciting and clever, yet also simple and elegant name, they knew they had to take their time. Finally, they were ready to reveal the name. The exciting new name is... College Football Playoff.

I'd like to blame last night's loss solely on Matt Thornton, whose error and poor pitching allowed the Indians to take the lead late in the game. Don't get me wrong - a lot of the loss falls on him. But the Sox still only scored 2 runs. Keeping in mind that Dylan Axelrod started the game, I wouldn't expect 2 runs to be enough. It should have been last night, but it wasn't.
On the plus side, my singling out Jeff Keppinger seems to have worked, as he got a whopping 2 hits last night! That's got to be a career high, right? Tomorrow it's McAllister vs. Quintana. Who ya got?
Stat of the Day: The Sox are 3-10 in their last 13, and they now sit at the bottom of the AL Central by 1.5 games.

- Somehow this article slipped past me when it was published, but it explains why I will be going to fewer Sox games this season. Seriously, this really blows. Sellers should have the option to sell for as little as they want.
UPDATE: I hadn't realized that the price does include service/delivery fee, so that's a big bonus. I take back some of my rage for that, although I do still believe that sellers should be able to pick their price.

Today's game reminded me a lot of yesterday's for some reason, even though the Sox managed to score a few more. Just kind of had that feeling all game that the Sox were never in control. Add that to an incredibly inconsistent bullpen, and you get what happened today: another solid outing by a starter ruined.
On the plus side, Mr. Adam Dunn hit himself a home run! Woo woo! Of course, it was a solo shot, but hey... baby steps...
I guess you can't call this a sweep, since the first game of the series was postponed, but man did this feel like one. Next up, the Sox have the Indians at home. Normally I'd say this is a series they should win, but who the hell knows anymore.
Stat of the Day: I'm all about the negativity right now, so I'm going to turn my focus to Jeff Keppinger. He is hitless in his last five games, going 0-20 in that stretch. I'll keep a counter on him until that changes. Hey, it helped Dunn, right?

I had a dream last night that Adam Dunn hit a home run to win yesterday's game. Didn't happen. Instead, he went 0-4 with three strikeouts and lowered his batting average to .098. I know batting average isn't everything, but come on. That's beyond ridiculous. That's a level of ridiculousness that words can't even describe.
Jeff Keppinger popped out to end the game in the 10th, which helped him get to 0-5 on the day. It also helped bring is average to .159.
Those are the Sox's 2 and 4 hitters. Knowing that, it's really no surprise they are struggling to score runs, even against the lowly Twins and Vance fucking Worley. Sadly I think games like yesterday are going to be common this year.
Stat of the Day: I'm going to keep a counter of Adam Dunn's consecutive games without a hit until he snaps the streak. After yesterday, it's at 8.

I think this may be a problem with the Sox all year long: the inability to put together a string of wins. Baseball, and sports in general, can be so frustrating when your team looks so good one game, and then so bad the very next game.
RA Dickey out-dueled Chris Sale for the win. On a different note, I find it interesting that Toronto has a knuckleballer, since they play in a dome. I thought knuckleballers used varying weather conditions to their advantage, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, my takeaways from last night's game were the following:
- Adam Dunn sucks
- Jeff Keppinger sucks
- We could be in trouble if Dayan Viciedo's injury is serious, even if he wasn't having a great year so far
Stat of the Day: Got a couple here, all surrounding Adam Dunn's futility. Dunn went 0-13 this series. He went 0-11 last series. So he's 0-24 in the last two series, but don't worry, he had a SOLID 1-5 outing in the finale against the Nats three series ago. Jesus Christ, he sucks right now.

W 7-0
This was the Sox's best game of the season. Plenty of offense and great pitching led to a 7-0 win. What made me especially happy was how we scored our runs. Sure, 4 of them came from the home run, but Flowers' 3-run shot was with 2 outs, and Alexei also had an RBI double with 2 outs. Timely hitting!
Adam Dunn, though, did not hit well. He's continuing to struggle this season, and I'd very much appreciate if he went back to whatever approach worked last year. For guys like Dunn, I think it's OK to have the three-outcome approach. Anything is better than how it is now.
Stat of the Day: Tonight's 7-run victory is the largest margin of victory for the Sox so far this year. The previous high was 3 (5-2 against KC).

Make that 4-4 in one-run games. Losing one-run games may be frustrating, but winning them is so sweet. I consider Toronto a difficult place to win (fuck turf, seriously), so seeing the Sox get the win was quite satisfying. It was also great to see Dylan Axelrod have a solid outing. If the Sox can get good production from the #5 starter, they could put together some streaks.

This wasn't a game the Sox should have won though. The Jays outhit them by four, and the game could have gone either way in the 9th. Oh well, the Sox have had their share of bad luck this year, too!
Addison Reed gave up his first run of the season in a shaky save. I'm not going to make much of it now, since blemishes like these can happen sometimes. It'll just be something to look out for in his next few outings.

It was really nice seeing Mark Buehrle pitch again, even if it was while his team beat the Sox. Things got off to a good start for the Sox, as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after a half inning. Of course, by the end of the first, the game was tied at 2. So both pitchers (Buehrle and Gavin Floyd) got off to shaky starts, and both were able to work through it. Just Buehrle worked through it better. Floyd allowed another run in the 2nd, and one in the 4th, and that was mostly it.
Tonight was a game that I felt either team could have won, and the Sox just happened to be on the wrong end. But it was a one-run game that they lost, and that brings the yearly record on one-run games to 3-4. I said early on that I think it's going to be important to win these types of games, and thus far the Sox have not done very well. One positive from tonight was that Dayan Viciedo went 3-4 with an RBI. Hopefully this is the start of him turning things around.
Stat of the Day: Historically, Adam Dunn has swung at 41.1% of the pitches he's been thrown, and has only swung at the first pitch of at-bats 27% of the time. This year, it's 50% pitches, and 46% first pitches. On those first pitches, he is seeing a poor outcome (out or strike) 91% of the time. [via FanGraphs]

Losing streak = ovaaaaa. I expected Jake Peavy to have a good outing, and he delivered. Once again, the Sox scored all their runs via the home run. It's still pretty early in the season, but they've got to figure out how to score runs other ways. I think losing streaks are inevitable when a team relies on one source for runs.
The game itself wasn't too interesting, but it was nice to see both the pitching do well and Paul Konerko drive in some runs. He's been off to a slow start this year, and if the Sox want to have any hopes of making the postseason, he's going to have to step up.
Stat of the Day: The 4-6 hitters of the Sox lineup are not doing very well. Adam Dunn is hitting .136 with 5 RBI, Paul Konerko is .220 with 8 RBI, and Dayan Viciedo is .118 with 3 RBI. STEP IT UP, GUYS.

Even when he was on the Sox, I didn't really like Nick Swisher. I think he was less entertaining and more annoying than he realized. So now that he's off the Sox, I definitely dislike him. Especially since he's killing them. Sure, he wasn't responsible for the grand slam that really put the game away, but his home run in the first didn't help. So the Sox dropped their fifth straight and seem to be spiraling out of control. When your ace gives up 8 runs through 4.1 innings, you're in trouble. The Sox'll look to Jake Peavy tomorrow to try to avoid being swept in the second straight series.
Stat of the Day: You don't have to go too far back to find the last time the Sox were on a five game losing streak. It happened during the collapse at the end of last year, from 9/19-9/23. The Sox lost two to the Royals and three to the Angels. That was part of the 2-10 stretch the helped end their playoff hopes.
Record: 4-7

The Sox lost two to the Royals and three to the Angels. That was part of the 2-10 stretch the helped end their playoff hopes.
Record: 4-7

Welp, you can't win if you don't score. Once again, the Sox outhit their opponent and lost. My mounting frustration is going to keep me from writing much here. I'm just going to say this is one of those losses that makes me very happy that there's another game tomorrow so I can quickly move on.

I was really hoping the Sox wouldn't get swept this series. At no point during any of these three games did I think the Sox would come out with a win. Now they're below .500 as they head to Cleveland for the weekend. It'd be nice to bounce back with a series win, and against the Tribe I think it's certainly reasonable. Anyway, tonight's game was pretty much more of the same. The pitching couldn't really keep the offense in the game. The Sox were able to get some hits against Dan Haren, but they just couldn't muster up enough runs. Tonight was another frustrating time where the Sox outhit their opponent, but lost. And this time, they lost by 3 runs. Yikes!
On the plus side, Alex Rios had another good night (even if he got out in the 9th). He's off to a great start this season. Gillaspie also continued to impress in Beckham's absense. Beckham, by the way, is out for 6 weeks with a broken wrist. Again, I can't really complain about the hitting tonight. The Sox just need to get those clutch hits to really inflict some damage.
Stat of the Day: Dylan Axelrod got his first career hit tonight!
Stat of the Day #2: The White Sox are 29th out of 30 in batting average with runners in scoring position at .133. Only the Angels are worse, at .120. That's right. Even the Marlins are better.

Once again, I didn't pay the closest attention to this game. But on the other hand, guess who finally got his taxes done!! I'll restate what I said before: the Nationals are good. Gavin Floyd pitched well until the Nationals started seeing him for the third time around. Even though neither of these games have been blowouts whatsoever, I still fully expected the Sox to lose them both. It would be really nice, though, to win this last one. I'm not ready to fall below .500 yet.
I hear Gordon Beckham might be headed to the DL. In all seriousness, at least this will give Conor Gillaspie some more time to prove himself. It couldn't hurt Beckham to have some competition, right?
Stat of the Day: The last time the Sox played at Washington was 2010, and they swept the series with wins from JJ Putz (a game Gavin Floyd started against Stephen Strasburg), Jake Peavy, and Freddy Garcia. Oh, to be facing that Nationals team...

I watched most of the first half of the Sox game, but then got distracted by all the other sporting events that were going on. I was pretty frustrated with how the Sox were playing, which is why I was able to flip between them and the other stuff. This was a frustrating loss for a couple of reasons. First, the Sox blew a chance to get a big lead early. They had several chances with men in scoring position in the earlier innings, and they really did not take advantage of it. Second, similar to a few games ago, they put together a comeback late and came up just short. Man, those are just the worst endings.
I give credit to Washington, though. I didn't realize how good of a team they were before seeing them play. I think I'll stick to what I said earlier... If the Sox can take one game out of this series, I'll consider it a success.
Oh also, Gordon Beckham went out injured. Here's to hoping he returns quickly. WE NEED HIM.
Stat of the Day: The Sox had made six substitutions total in their previous six games before today. They made seven substitutions today. Welcome to NL baseball.

This felt like a game that the Sox should have lost. They were outhit 7-5, and at one point 16 Sox hitters in a row were retired. For a moment in the 10th inning, I was convinced they were going to lose another extra innings game to the Mariners, but Addison Reed escaped trouble, which left the Sox with a chance to pounce in the bottom half. Dayan Viciedo was the savior with a no-doubter, and the Sox won their second series of the year.
The 16 hitters in a row being retired is an issue. To me, it just feels like this happens to the Sox so frequently. This is probably a downside of being a HR or die team; when you don't hit the homers, you're not going to reach base. Anyway, I'll take today's win. The Sox go on the road to Washington starting Tuesday, and part of me would be happy just taking one there.
Stat of the Day: I know it's early, but the Sox are 3-1 in one-run games this year. Not a crazy stat, but I think it will be a good one to track as the season progresses. I think if the Sox are going to make the postseason, they're going to have to win quite a few close ones.

Got two games to run through... First, a painful 8-7 loss. In this one, the Sox game back from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game at 6. They then gave up 2 runs in the top of the 10th. In the bottom half, the Sox had already gotten 1 run across and had the bases loaded with 2 outs. Unfortunately, that's where the comeback died. It was one of those games where knowing the end result, I would have preferred the Sox go down in order in the 10th. But hey, I admire their willingness to fight until the end, and I think it's a good sign that they don't quit.
Yesterday, the Sox won 4-3 in the first game I've been to this year. Due to the all-you-can-eat-and-drink party beforehand, I wasn't paying the closest attention to this game. Alex Rios had a big home run for us, and despite allowing 2 runs in the 8th, we managed to hold on for the win. Mr. Addison Reed came on to shut things down once again, and my record at games this year started at 1-0.
Stat of the Day: Addison Reed still hasn't allowed a hit this year. Yeah, OK, he's only pitched three innings so far. But I love when closers don't make me sweat. Here's to hoping he doesn't go Shingo on us.

The Sox haven’t swept or been swept in the first series of the season since 2003, when they were swept by the Royals. That streak continued today as they lost to the Royals 3-1. I don’t know what it feels like to start the year with a sweep, but I bet it feels great. Anyway, this loss was not surprising; Jeremy Guthrie seems to completely own the Sox for a frustratingly unknown reason. The Sox had some chances to score late, but they couldn’t seem to get that one magical hit. That happens pretty often in baseball (at least with the Sox), and it doesn’t make losing feel any better. Neither does outhitting your opponent, as the Sox did the Royals.
Let’s get back to Jeremy Guthrie. You know who he doesn’t own? GORDON BECKHAM. That’s right. My boy was 4-4 with 4 singles. Oh yeah, and 0 RBI, 0 R. Whatever.
Are you ready for your stat of the day? I Hope so. 3 of the Sox’s 4 best batting averages belong to players in the latter third of the order. Aren’t early season stats the best?

Sometimes I love taking advantage of a young season to spout out facts that won't be true for long. For example, for a brief moment that is still ongoing because the Tigers blew it against the Twins, the White Sox have the best record in baseball. Furthermore, all of the White Sox's runs have been scored via home runs. Finally, Addison Reed has not given up a hit and is perfect in his save opportunities.
Yeah, the season's only two games old, and at the time of this writing most teams haven't finished (or even started) their second game. Whatever!
We got home runs today from Tyler Flowers (2 in 2 games!), Adam Dunn, Alexei Ramirez, and Dayan Viciedo. I'd be happier with this victory if we hadn't squandered a 2-on-no-out situation late in the game. We can't be missing opportunities like that too often without expecting consequences. Anyway, I'm happy with another win over the pesky Royals. And I'm even happier now that the Tigers have lost. AL Central is ours for now!

The White Sox opened their season today with a 1-0 win over the Royals. There was a time when I thought beating the Royals was no big deal, but our struggles against them recently paired with the Royals' improved roster this year makes this win actually a little impressive to me. Tyler Flowers provided the only offense we needed with a solo shot in the 5th, and Addison Reed saved Chris Sale's excellent outing. Unfortunately, early season games are generally played during the day, so I was unable to actually watch this one. Boo.
For those of you who didn't notice, the White Sox won their season opener 1-0 in 2005, as well. So logic says this year's team is on their way to a World Series win. You can't argue that one.

- Digg to the rescue?
- NHL realignment is official. I'm not generally a traditionalist, but I'm finding myself agreeing with those that are upset about the Blackhawks and Red Wings being broken up. And further, it makes no sense to have 2 divisions of 7 and 2 of 8.
- The Classical on Skip Bayless.
- Samsung seems to do things pretty well. Good timing on the GSIV, I think.

- A new Deadspin layout means another disaster to get used to.
3/12 UPDATE: One thing that's changed that I love is that now I can read entire Deadspin articles from within Google Reader. Some sites do this, while others force you to click through to their website to see full articles. The former is way better.
